"Seaward Drift"* is more than just a beach on the north Devon coast—it’s my sanctuary. A place where the world feels far away, where the only interruptions are the gentle curiosity of a seal or the unpredictable crash of a rogue wave. This hidden gem, often shielded from the relentless south-westerly winds, offers a perfect escape for sea dipping, snorkeling, and losing yourself in nature’s embrace, my favourite Sandy Cove Devon.
Creating this abstract seascape in acrylic flow art was a gift I gave to myself, a week of solitude I affectionately called "Operation: Paint Without Pants" and maybe a bit of skinny dipping at Sandy Cove ;). It was a time to immerse myself fully in the creative process, free from distractions, and reconnect with the elements that make this place so special. For a long time, I’ve been dreaming of how to capture the essence of this coastline—the steadfast rocky outcrops that have weathered centuries, and the contrast of their ruggedness against the still, protected waters.
The painting moves between soft blues and delicate splashes of waves as they meet the shore, blending into the swirling mix of seaweed and driftwood that the tides leave behind—a rich, organic tapestry, interwoven with wild bracken and heathers clinging to the headland. It’s a reflection of life itself—moments of serene calm punctuated by the inevitable chaos.
When I look at "Seaward Drift,"* I feel a deep sense of both peace and turbulence, as if I’m trying to find stillness while the world hums with activity around me. This abstract seascape is my attempt to hold on to that fleeting moment of balance, to share the beauty of a place that has become a part of me.
Each brushstroke carries my love for this place, and my signature on the canvas is a promise—of the care, passion, and, yes, the late nights spent bringing it to life. With "Seaward Drift," I hope you feel that same sense of peace, that it invites you to slow down, to breathe, and to find beauty in the unexpected corners of life—even if those corners are captured in an abstract seascape hanging in your living room, bringing the energy of Sandy Cove into your home.
